“She is so brave”—Jacqueline Kennedy celebrates Caroline’s first equestrian triumph
ALS signed “Jackie,” one page both sides, 5 x 7, personal letterhead, postmarked 1967. Handwritten letter to her father-in-law, Joseph P. Kennedy, beginning, "Dearest Grandpa," in full: "How do you like these pictures of Caroline jumping my big hunter, Winchester? She won 6th out of 45 children, her first time jumping a big horse. Then you see, Courtney jumping Caroline's Irish pony Leprauchan—which De Valera gave us in 1963—& last of all in color—Courtney, Caroline & I winning 2nd prize in the Family Class—the Kennedy Family! As you were the first person who took Caroline riding with you—You on Mickey & she on Bambi when she was just a baby—I thought you'd like to see this—she is so brave—& that she inherits from you!" In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Kennedy's own hand and franked in the upper right, "Jacqueline Kennedy," as well as an earlier color 8.5 x 7 mounted photograph of Caroline riding a pony on the White House grounds, with the mount cracked across the top.
This warm family letter captures Jacqueline Kennedy’s close relationship with her father-in-law and the Kennedys’ enduring enthusiasm for horseback riding. Written four years after President Kennedy’s assassination, it proudly shares Caroline’s early equestrian success while linking her courage to Joseph P. Kennedy, who had first taken her riding as a small child. The mention of Leprechaun, the Irish pony presented by President Éamon de Valera in 1963, adds a poignant connection to the Kennedy presidency and the family’s celebrated ties to Ireland.
