N.B. Markiel studied art in Cracow and Paris, obtaining scholarships and notable awards at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. Deported to the Jewish internment camp Drancy and later Auschwitz in 1943, he continued to paint and draw as a means of survival, trading his art in exchange for food for himself and others. After the liberation, Markiel returned to his life-long career as a painter and today his works can be found in the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum.
