Jakob Emanuel Gaisser, Genre Scene with Musicians, Munich 1863

[ translate ]

A genre painting in oil on canvas depicting a domestic music scene in the 17th-century style. The work depicts three figures in an interior: to the left stands a woman in an elaborately designed, shimmering blue-grey silk dress, holding a sheet of music in her hand. In the centre sits another woman in a red and white, fur-trimmed garment playing a lute, while a music book lies on the table before her. Behind the table stands a man in dark clothing with a white collar playing a violin. On the table, a still life with fruit, a carafe, and glasses is arranged on a patterned carpet. In the right foreground lies a small black and white spaniel. The painting is executed in the tradition of the 19th-century Munich School and is characterised by a detailed rendering of textures and fabrics. In the background to the right, the shadowy faces of two children can be discerned. The work is housed in a massive, magnificently decorated gilt frame with rocailles, shell motifs, and acanthus leaves at the corners. A signature and location in red are located centrally at the bottom edge of the picture on the wooden floorboards: J. E. Gaisser. Munich 1863. Frame dimensions 109 x 92 cm. Image dimensions 82 x 67 cm.
