Jalisco Pottery Female Figure Nursing Child

[ translate ]

**Originally Listed At $350**

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A hand-built pottery statue depicting a cross-legged female nursing a child who lays in her lap. Dressed in only a skirt, the woman's pointed breasts hang below her square shoulders as the child sucks at her teat. Her tubular arms embrace the nude child, with the right supporting the child's head and the left holding the child's knee. Both figures present flat, rectangular torsos and elongated heads. The woman juts her head forward, presenting slender eyes, a sharp nose baring a septum adornment, and full lips, all below a diagonally incised coiffure. A pair of lengthy ears with annular ear spools flanks her head. Note the artist's close attention to detail as evident in the woman's carefully delineated fingers and toes. A charming example from ancient Jalisco culture! Size: 4" W x 4.75" H (10.2 cm x 12.1 cm)

Provenance: private Burlington, North Carolina, USA collection; ex-A to Z Auctions, Burlington, North Carolina; ex-James Pratley estate, Galveston, Texas, USA before 2000

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
