Jamacoaque Polychrome Seated Cacique Figure

[ translate ]

**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Manabi Province, Jamacoaque (also Jama Coaque or Jama-Coaque) culture, ca. 500 CE. A hollow-built pottery figure of a cacique, an elderly male individual who is perceived as a powerful or elite member of society. The orange-painted man sits atop an integral plug-shaped stool, wears blue-green bangles on his wrists, calves, and ankles, and holds a fragment of a missing item to his mouth, perhaps a drinking vessel or a smoking pipe. Incised striations across his cheeks and brow indicate his advanced age, and his elaborate headdress wraps around the circular opening atop his head. A colorful example of ancient Jamacoaque figural artistry! Size: 3" L x 2.5" W x 3.75" H (7.6 cm x 6.4 cm x 9.5 cm)

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection acquired pre-1970.

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to recent increases of shipments being seized by Australian & German customs (even for items with pre-UNESCO provenance), we will no longer ship most antiquities and ancient Chinese art to Australia & Germany.
