Jamacoaque Pottery Jar Lid w/ Zoomorph, TL Tested

[ translate ]

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Jamacoaque (Jama Coaque) culture, ca. 500 CE. An intriguing and finely decorated pottery lid meant to accompany a large vessel. The lid features a three-tiered design, with each layer adorned with applique discs, lemniscate forms, flowers, and horizontal bars that create a wondrous presentation. Atop the lid is a highly abstract and rather adorable zoomorphic creature, perhaps a seahorse or another marine creature, with a protruding peripheral fin, linear bands along the upper and lower body, vine-like tendrils across the center, and a protruding snout with incised teeth beneath a pair of petite eyes. Remains of orange and green pigment are visible across the composition. Size: 8.125" W x 7.125" H (20.6 cm x 18.1 cm)

This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full report will accompany purchase.

Provenance: private Healy collection, Studio City, California, USA; ex-Arte Primitivo, New York, New York, USA

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

For categories of items that are acceptable to ship to Australia or Germany, please contact us directly or work with your local customs brokerage firm.

#166566
Condition Report: Repaired from over two dozen pieces, with chips and losses in some areas, and adhesive residue along break lines; most interior break lines are resurfaced for stabilization. Chips and nicks to lid tiers and zoomorphic creature, with fading to orange and green pigment, and light encrustations in scattered areas. Light remains of pigment throughout, and good preservation to overall form and features of zoomorph.
