James Boynton (American, 1928-2010), Bleed Image, Packaged Horizon X, 1967 Color Lithograph
James “Jack” Boynton (American, 1928–2010) was a Fort Worth-born painter and printmaker who became an important figure in the postwar Houston art scene. Trained at Texas Christian University, Boynton worked for decades as both an artist and teacher, developing a style known for precise draftsmanship and surreal imagery. His work is held in major museum collections including the National Gallery of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Norton Simon Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Amon Carter Museum of American Art.
Bleed Image, Packaged Horizon X, 1967, is a color lithograph printed in red and black on cream wove paper. A thin black rectangle encloses a largely open field, while a broad red band spreads across the lower portion of the sheet in pooled, granular passages. Black linear textures and a dark elongated form run through the center, with the red printing extending beyond the rectangular boundary. Inscribed in graphite “Tamarind Imp. James Boynton” lower left. Tamarind workshop blindstamps appear in the lower margin. Sheet measures approximately 18.75 x 18.5 inches. Overall good appearance. The sheet shows light toning with minor handling. Image presents well. Provenance of Martin and Enid Gleich.
