James Boynton (American, 1928-2010), Snake, Packaged Horizon IV, 1967 Color Lithograph
James “Jack” Boynton (American, 1928–2010) was a Fort Worth-born painter and printmaker who became an important figure in the postwar Houston art scene. Trained at Texas Christian University, Boynton worked for decades as both an artist and teacher, developing a style known for precise draftsmanship and surreal imagery. His work is held in major museum collections including the National Gallery of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Norton Simon Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Amon Carter Museum of American Art.
Snake, Packaged Horizon IV, 1967, is a color lithograph printed in blue, green, magenta, violet, and black on cream wove paper. The composition places a looping green and magenta form against a broad blue field, its profile rising from a narrow horizontal ledge above a densely textured violet rectangle crossed by dark linear marks. Small mechanical fittings appear at either end of the ledge. Inscribed in graphite “Tamarind Imp.” lower left and signed “James Boynton” lower right. Tamarind workshop blindstamps appear in the lower margin. Sheet measures approximately 18.75 x 18.25 inches. Overall good appearance. The sheet shows light toning with minor handling. Image presents well. Provenance of Martin and Enid Gleich.
