James Buchanan Congressional Signature Clip, With Handsome Engraving
Signature
A signature clip belonging to James Buchanan (1791-1868), 15th U.S. President, almost certainly dating from his time serving as a U.S. Congressman from Pennsylvania (1821-1831) or as a U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania (1834-1845). N.d., n.p. Signed and inscribed by Buchanan as: "James Buchanan / of Pennsylvania." Buttre / Johnson, Fry & Co. engraving of Buchanan as President likely excised from a book, ca. 1864. Uneven toning, and isolated discoloration mostly around the edges. Discreetly pencil-inscribed by a collector verso. Else very good. 7.875" x 10.625". From The Doug Wertman Collection.
