James Cagney Autograph Letter Signed

[ translate ]

ALS signed “Jim,” one page both sides, 6.25 x 8.5, Verney Farm (Stanfordville, New York) letterhead, September 12, 1968. Handwritten letter to "Anne," in part: "The recordings arrived while we were away at Nantucket. I started a search for the record player. Gone! The place has been burglarized, vandalized and paralyzed by juveniles, gray-haired juveniles, and amateur electricians who charge $7.50 to $8.00 an hour. Somewhere along the way the record player went with them. I’ll take the recordings back to Verney Farm where we have a machine. At least I hope we have one. It was there when we left. I’ll report immediately.

Regarding my doing the Gardner material I can see where it might add up to fun. However——! Paul O’Brian wrote me some time back telling me one of the net-works wanted to do a ‘special’ on me covering my forty years in show business. (Did I tell you this?) Well, in any case, I wrote Paul I was completely thru with the business, wanted no more of it, etc, etc. His was a most gracious letter and I think I replied in kind. Did my best. That was all there was to that. (no screen credit) (no pay).

I did a bit of narration for a producer friend a couple of years ago and the word was out that I was again ready to don ‘the sock & buskin.’ It took a while for the calls and the letters to die down. So, Anne, while the idea is an attractive one, and I do appreciate your interest, I’ll have to nix the suggestion. I hope this doesn’t sound too abrupt. I certainly don’t mean it to be.” In fine condition, with paperclip rust marks to the left side.
