James Crawford Thom (1835 - 1898) was born in New York City. He studied at an artist colony in Perth Amboy, N.J. along with L.C. Tiffany, at the National Academy in 1853, and in 1859 with Corot and Frere in Ecouen, France, becoming the first American in the School of Ecouen. In 1864 - 1873, Thom worked in England, often exhibiting at the Royal Academy. From 1884 to his death, Thom lived in Old Bridge section of East Brunswick, New Jersey.
