Hallmark by James Deakin & Sons

The company was founded in Sheffield in 1865 by James Deakin and their brand name was James Deakin & Co. In 1871 he worked with his three sons: William, John and Albert, changing the brand name of the firm to Deakin James & Sons.

In 1888 they opened offices and shops in London. Further branches have been opened in Glasgow and Belfast. In 1897 the company changed its brand again to James Deakin & Sons Ltd, which means that if Ltd does not appear in the hallmark, the product was made before 1897.
It closed in 1936.

Their JD & S brand was easily mistaken for James Dixon & Sons. However in the absence of trademarks JD & S of James Deakin & Sons is always JD above & S below. But often their mark was a drawing of a bell.
