James Garfield Personally Owned Copy of Library of Congress "Catalogue of Works"

From the personal library of James Garfield. Entitled "Catalogue of Works on Political Economy and the Science of Government in the Library of Congress", (Washington, D.C.: Government Printing Office, 1869). Small Quarto. 3-65pp. With a bookplate "Inter Folia Fructus. Library of James A. Garfield. No. 197.c." Brown cloth covered boards with gilt lettering on the front cover. Marbled endpapers. Wear at the spine, edges, and corners. Water damage has caused warping to the covers and binding. Minor foxing throughout internal pages. Soiling to the back blank pages.

President James Arthur Garfield studied at William College in Massachusetts and became President of Hiram College at just the age of twenty-six. A highly educated man, he possessed a library of about 2500 volumes, comprised of the classics, modern literature, history, political science and economics. His personal library at Lawnfield in Mentor, Ohio was later used as his campaign headquarters after he launched his "front porch" campaign. The bookplate with the motto "Inter Folia Fructus," translates to "Among the Leaves, Fruit."
