\Artist: James John Hill RBA (1811-1882)
Technique: Oil on canvas\Signature: Hand signed\Dimensions: 118_97_9_cm
A wonderful early Victorian English School oil on canvas by the very well listed British painter James John Hill RBA (1811 – 1882) , known also by his alias J. J. Hill, who was an English landscape and portrait painter. Known for his many rustic paintings and portraits of Lady Burdett-Coutts, Hill's work is highly sought after and collectable and many of his paintings have sold reputable though British and American auction houses. It is with pleasure we can offer this piece through Catawiki art auctions. We believe there are 15 works of art by JJ Hill in the British National collection. We have recently acquired a few ourselves and will be auctioning them exclusively at intervals through Catawiki over the coming weeks. The painting being offered is from a private collection from the Eastern Counties of England. The painting has been restored at some point and relined; most likely within the last 25 years ( see photos) . There is gilding loss to the sides of the frame; most noticeably at the top and the bottom of the frame. The frame has very small pieces missing but nothing it really noticeable when the painting it hung. The paint layer is stable but has suffered from loss and damage in the past and in some areas there has been retouching in scattered locations that are not not visible to the naked eye. See photo of the ladies skin on arm as there is some historical paint reaction and corresponding texture , but this does not in our opinion detract from the paintings beauty. The varnish is clear and even. There are some losses to the gilding predominantly to the sides. The frame is approximately 170 years old. This beautiful " figure in landscape", may well have been painted in Ireland as Hill travelled and worked there in the early 1850's; and the distinctive landscape could well reflect this . The work is in very good visual condition with good tension to the canvas; and it has the benefit of its original 19th gilt frame which is rather splendid and and a valuable item on it's own. We endeavour to pack all items carefully, but given the ornate nature of the frame it is being offered as a gift with the painting.
