James Strombotne (American, born 1934), Co Co, Recognitions III, 1968 Color Lithograph
James Strombotne is a Southern California figurative painter and printmaker associated with the postwar Claremont art community. After earning his MFA from Claremont Graduate School in 1959, he taught at the University of California, Riverside for more than four decades. His work is represented in the Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, National Gallery of Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum, and Norton Simon Museum
Co Co, from Recognitions III, 1968, is a color lithograph printed in black, gray, and blue-green inks on Copperplate Deluxe wove paper. Three formally dressed women are shown shoulder to shoulder before alternating black and white vertical fields; the turquoise hair of the figure at left provides the composition’s only strong color accent. Inscribed in graphite “Co Co” and “Tam. Imp.” lower left and signed and dated “Strombotne ’68” lower right. “Tam. Imp.” identifies an impression retained by the Tamarind Lithography Workshop rather than one from the numbered edition. Tamarind workshop and printer blindstamps appear near the lower center; the verso bears the notation “1288 / COPPERPLATE DELUXE.” Sheet measures approximately 26 x 20 inches; image measures approximately 23 x 16.375 inches. The sheet shows light toning with minor handling; the image presents well. Provenance of Martin and Enid Gleich.
