James Strombotne (American, born 1934), Evening, 1965 Color Lithograph

[ translate ]

James Strombotne is a Southern California figurative painter and printmaker associated with the postwar Claremont art community. After earning his MFA from Claremont Graduate School in 1959, he taught at the University of California, Riverside for more than four decades. His work is represented in the Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, National Gallery of Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum, and Norton Simon Museum.

Evening, 1965, is a color lithograph from stone and zinc printed in green-black and yellow on white Arches paper by Kenneth Tyler and published by Tamarind Lithography Workshop, Los Angeles. A faceless nude woman stands before a shadowed rural landscape, with dark trees and a fence line stretching across the horizon beneath a broadly brushed yellow sky. Inscribed in graphite “Evening” lower left, “Tam Imp.” lower center, and signed and dated “Strombotne 65” lower right, with the Tamarind bell and Kenneth Tyler printer’s blindstamps near the lower left. Verso inscribed “1359". The “Tam Imp.” inscription identifies this as one of nine workshop-retained Tamarind impressions, apart from the numbered edition of 20. Sheet measures approximately 16.5 x12.75 inches. Overall very good appearance, with light handling along the naturally deckled edges. Image presents well. Provenance of Martin and Enid Gleich.
