Jan Albertsz. Rootius - Still life with Chinese vessel, a Wanli bowl containing hazelnuts, an orange and two glasses
Jan Albertsz. Rootius
Still life with Chinese vessel, a Wanli bowl containing hazelnuts, an orange and two glasses
Oil on canvas (relined). 62.5 x 54 cm.
Signed lower right: JARootius (ligated).
This signed painting is one of the rarer still lifes by Jan Albertsz. Rootius, a painter who worked in Hoorn and specialised primarily in portraits, whilst the genre of still-life painting was practised more by his son Jacob. His œuvre is relatively small, as Jan Albertsz. Rootius died at the age of 42. This makes the discovery of this previously unknown painting from a private Dutch collection all the more welcome.
The single orange could be interpreted as an allusion to the House of Orange, whilst the two pieces of Chinese porcelain point to the flourishing Dutch trade in goods from the Far East. This trade brought prosperity and refinement to the households of the skilled merchants.
Provenance
Dutch private collection.
