Jan Brueghel the Younger Cornelius Schut - The Virgin and Child in a Floral Wreath
Jan Brueghel the Younger
Cornelius Schut
The Virgin and Child in a Floral Wreath
Oil on panel (parquetted). 119 x 89 cm.
This style of composition featuring a garland of flowers surrounding a usually identical religious motif is an exceptionally popular invention of the 17th century Flemish school. The fruit and flowers reflect the glory of God's creation, whereas the central scene expresses the theological message of the work. Most paintings of this kind were collaborations between two specialised artists.
Klaus Ertz attributes the flowers in this large-format work to Jan Brueghel II and the Virgin in the centre to Cornelis Schut. Like Brueghel, Schut was also active in Antwerp and was among the artists linked to the circle of Peter Paul Rubens.
