Jan Jacobsz. van der Stoffe
Leiden 1611–1682
A battle in a rocky landscape

oil on panel
unframed: 54.4 x 74.4 cm.; 21⅜ x 29¼ in.
framed: 70.3 x 89.3 cm.; 27⅝ x 35⅛ in.

Condition Report:
The panel is uncradled, flat and stable. A join in the panel is visible across the centre of the composition, but this appears to be stable and is supported by a wooden baton embedded within the panel's reverse. The paint surface is clean and the varnish is clear, but slightly uneven. No losses to the paint surface are visible. A handful of retouchings can be noted with the naked eye: these are concentrated primarily along the aforementioned join in the panel, to fill in old losses, in the black trousers of the figure second from the left, in the clothing of the figure on the far right of the main group, and in the background. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms much of the above, while also revealing further retouchings within the central figure group, in the clothing of the men lying on the ground and in that of the man just right of centre on the brown horse. The largest of these measures approximately 2 x 5 cm. Overall, the painting is in good condition. It presents well and is ready to hang.
