Estimate

£600 - £800

Jan Jozef Horemans (1682-1752/9), Bedroom interior with a man holding a baby wrapped in a blanket, oil on canvas, signed with a monogram, 41.5cm x 34.5cm
Provenance: Messrs Sotheby's 'Old Master Paintings' 30th October 1997. Hammer price £2,000

More Information

The painting has been relined. The varnish is yellowing slightly. The paint is thinning in places, particularly bottom left where the monogram is purported to exist (see Sotheby's entry 1997). However, we are of the opinion that the painting was signed with initials and these are barely visible but are present.
There is tape bordering the painting on three sides. When viewed under UV light there is a small element of overpainting to the central figure's face and to the window edge (see images).
Otherwise the picture is untouched.
The frame has some wear, knocks and scrapes consistent with age. In our view the frame is of late 19th Century date.
