Jan Miel (1599-1663) was a Flemish painter and engraver who was active in Italy. He initially formed part of the circle of Dutch and Flemish genre painters in Rome. The artwork, a "Bucolic Encounter," depicts a shepherd and milkmaid in dialogue beside a barn, with cattle in the foreground, painted with a keen eye for the intricate details of rural life. The painting measures 64. 5 x 51 cm and, while it is unsigned on the front, bears the artist's name typed on a sticker on the reverse.
