A Treatise on the Crown’s Finances in the Years 1507–1532, or at the Dawn of the Reign of Sigismund I the Old. It was published in Kraków in 1868 at the author’s own expense, at the Jagiellonian University printing press, and the author’s identity is revealed only in library catalogs, where the pseudonym “L.” is identified as Jan Tadeusz Lubomirski. The work is cited in contemporary historical literature, including studies on the military affairs of the Jagiellonian dynasty and on the pledging of grand ducal estates in Lithuania. The book was published three years after the author’s return from exile.
Jan Tadeusz Lubomirski of the Szreniawa coat of arms without the Cross was born in 1826 in Stanisławów near Dubrowny and died in 1908 in Warsaw. After the death of his parents, by order of Tsar Nicholas I, he was sent to the Corps of Pages and then to the Alexandrian Lyceum in St. Petersburg. After serving in the Horse Guard, he studied in France and England. Upon his return, he settled in Warsaw, where he engaged in charitable work, particularly among artisan communities, and became president of the Warsaw Charitable Society. During the January Uprising, he served in the National Government, and in November 1863, Romuald Traugutt entrusted him with the Department of Internal Affairs. After being arrested, he was exiled deep into Russia, to Nizhny Novgorod, and returned to Warsaw in 1865. His writings include “The Agricultural Population in Poland from the 16th to the 18th Century,” published “The Diplomatic Code of the Duchy of Mazovia” (1863) and “The Book of the Czersk Region” (1879), co-edited the “Educational Encyclopedia” and the “Agricultural Encyclopedia,” and wrote entries for Orgelbrand’s Universal Encyclopedia. He was married to Maria née Zamoyska and was the father of Zdzisław Lubomirski, who later became a member of the Regency Council of the Kingdom of Poland.
Provenance: a piece without institutional stamps, library call numbers, or handwritten ownership inscriptions.
A must-have for researchers of the economic and fiscal history of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, numismatists, collectors of Kraków prints, and bibliophiles seeking volumes in their original bindings. A rare volume in its original, uncut form, combining scholarly interests with the life story of one of the most intriguing figures in 19th-century Polish public life.
The piece is clean and entirely uncut, with full margins preserved and the edges of the sheets still joined. The block is compact and stable, the original stitching is intact, the folds are even, and the paper retains its stiffness, with natural spots and discoloration on the margins, but no water stains, tears, or missing text. The original paper publisher’s cover is complete, in good to very good condition, with a solid spine, slight creases at the corners, and a light dusting of dust.
