Jan Veth (1864-1925) - Portret Jozef Israëls (1824-1911)

[ translate ]

The artwork offers an intimate portrait of the famous painter Jozef Israëls (1824-1911) , a leading figure in the Hague School. The portrait captures the character and dedication of Jozef Israëls as an artist; he is depicted in deep concentration as he paints, with a palette in one hand and a brush in the other. His attention is completely focused on the canvas in front of him, capturing a moment of creation and artistic inspiration.
.
Jan Pieter Veth came from a wealthy, artistic background and was educated at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam. There he became friends with, among others, Willem Witsen and Maurits van der Valk, with whom he edited the visual arts section in the magazine of the same name when De Nieuwe Gids was founded. He mainly made a name for himself with his portraits, although he also painted landscapes. He was also a skilled etcher and lithographer. Between 1888 and 1896 he made numerous portrait lithographs of prominent figures from politics, science and culture for the Weekly De Amsterdammer, as well as for De Kroniek. This established his fame as a portraitist, especially in Amsterdam and the surrounding area. All major Dutch museums have portraits of the artist in their collection.
