Jan Weissenbruch

[ translate ]

(The Hague 1822 - 1880)
Resting figure with dog at the bleaching fields (circa 1841-1844)
Signed l.r.
Monogrammed on the reverse
Oil on panel, 19.2 x 26.6 cm
N.B.:
Jan Weissenbruch is praised by art historians for his vivid and realistic manner of painting. His picturesque city scapes, village and river views have a mystical atmosphere. Weissenbruch was passionate about historical architecture and depicted old buildings, city gates and city walls, which were slowly disappearing because of their redundance. His realism was extraordinary and revolutionary; this gave him a special position within the Dutch art of the 19th century. Not long ago, the Teylers Museum in Haarlem organized an retrospective exhibition, in which his important oeuvre was honoured.
