Jan et Joël Martel Chat
Jan and Joël Martel
1896 - 1966 | 1896 - 1966
Chat
Designed in 1925
Reconstituted stone
Signed J MARTEL on the terrace
42 x 15 x 23 cm ; 16 ½ x 5 ⅞ x 9 in.
Condition Report:
Good overall condition.
The stone presents with surface irregularities, such as pinholes, which are inherent to the making process.
The stone also presents with minute losses along the base, all consistent with age.
We observe a tiny loss of stone that has been previously filled on the proper right shoulder of the cat but not visually distracting.
A close inspection reveals a former restoration to the proper right ear and a very thin crack on the forehead of the cat, both barely visible.
Catalogue Note:
A similar model was presented in the pavillon de la Société des Artistes Décorateurs, Une ambassade Française, in the Chambre de jeune fille at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris, in 1925. It was also exhibited in a Chambre à coucher on Jean and Jacques Adnet's booth at the 18th Salon des Artistes Décorateurs in Paris, in 1928.
Provenance:
Maurice Delort collection, France, thence by descent
Private collection, France
