Jan van Goyen - Old Tower on a River Bank
Jan van Goyen
Old Tower on a River Bank
Oil on panel. 38 x 52 cm.
Signed lower right on the rowing boat: VG 1646.
The present river landscape, dated 1646, is a fine example of the technique that made the landscape painter Jan van Goyen famous: The use of a highly reduced colour palette, the apparent simplicity of which belies a great dramatic effect. This subtle palette of grey, silver and white tones combined with the skilful use of an ochre ground in the darkest areas of the foreground and the sky lends his paintings an almost monochrome appearance.
