Van Herwijnen travelled extensively and worked for some time in Paris and southern France. In 1919 he already had an exhibition in the Heystee building on the Herengracht in Amsterdam where his drawings could be seen. After working in Amsterdam, Arnhem until 1926 and in Heemstede, he settled in Bergen in 1939, where his style developed. Here he painted landscapes, flower paintings and still lifes, which are considered part of the Bergen School. He was a member of Arti et Amicitiae in Amsterdam and in Bergen of the KCB, the Kunstenaars. Centrum. Bergen. In 2008, the Museum Kranenburgh in Bergen hosted a major retrospective of his work, entitled Jan van Herwijnen, painter from self-preservation. K
