In a large acid-free mat Venationes Ferarum designed by Jan van der Straet ( 1523 - 1605) The King of England Hunting for Rabbits; in the right foreground, the King, on horseback, bears dead rabbits suspended from the horse's reins, while a small dog tries to leap onto the saddle; two companions on horseback are seen beyond, to the right; to left, small dogs chase rabbits near a set of burrows; a town is seen in the distance. Lettered within the image: 'Ioan. Stradanus invent. / Theodorus Galle sculp. / Phls Galle excud. ' Lettered below image: Latin text arranged in two columns, 'Callidus effossis. . . ministrant. ' Engraving Reference: New Hollstein (Dutch & Flemish) 499 (Johannes Stradanus) Baroni Vannucci 1997 693. 38 This is an early (first?) state before the number in the textline bottom left. The cartoons were so successful he did two more series, published as engravings by Antwerp printmakers.
