The present drawing is one of a series of similar works by the Flemish painter van der Straet. A large number of similar hunting scenes from his hand have survived in both public and private collections.
Jan van der Straet left Flanders in 1550 and moved to Florence. Here he worked with Vasari at the court of the Medici, both at the Palazzo Vecchio and in their villa in Poggio a Caiano. In Florence, where he died in 1605, he latinised his name and henceforth called himself Giovanni Stradanus.
