Jane Peterson (American, 1876-1965)

Zinnias in Persian Bowl with Chinese Background
Signed "JANE PETERSON" l.r., titled on a handwritten label affixed to the stretcher.
Oil, including golden pigment, on canvas, 32 x 32 in. (81.5 x 81.3 cm), framed.
Condition: Craquelure in areas of heaviest impasto, pinhole puncture at l.c. edge, scattered very minor abrasions with paint losses, faint stretcher bar marks, minor surface grime, fragmentary gummed labels affixed to the reverse.

Provenance: A private Massachusetts collection.

N.B. Jonathan Joseph has reviewed images of this work, and he dates the painting to 1925 based on notes from a vernissage of that year in which Peterson debuted works using gold and silver leaf backgrounds.

Eight small tacks on the back of the stretcher at the u.l. corner, along with some paper fragments, suggest that there were once exhibition labels affixed there. Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts records indicate that Peterson did exhibit a painting called "Zinnias" in 1928. Her given address (1007 Fifth Avenue) matches the address on this painting's label, but without further information such as dimensions or other documentation, one can't be certain this was the same painting, especially since zinnias were a favorite subject for the artist.
Estimate $5,000-7,000

Framed dimensions are 36 x 36 x 1 1/2 in.

There is some craquelure in the white pigment of the vase and in the pink zinnia located at the u.l. in the arrangement. The most noticeable abrasion is located in the bottom rim of the vase on the right side and measures 1/4 in.

The painting is not lined, and there are no signs of restoration when viewed under UV light.

Items may have wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging. Any condition statement given, as a courtesy to a client, is only an opinion and should not be treated as a statement of fact. Skinner shall have no responsibility for any error or omission.
