This "beautifully engraved map of North America had greater influence than any other to date in perpetuating the theory of California as an island" (Burden). The map is also notable for its depiction of indigenous animals, with Wheat noting: "the charming vignettes of animals scattered over its surface represent its most authentic information, so far as what is now western United States is concerned."
