Japanese Bronze Daikoku Riding Ox Sculpture
Impressive Japanese bronze figural sculpture depicting Daikoku, the traditional deity of prosperity and good fortune, seated atop a large ox while raising his symbolic wish-granting mallet overhead. The jovial figure is modeled with a rounded cap, flowing robes, boots, and a large treasure sack resting behind him, while the naturalistically rendered ox features a textured mane, horns, defined musculature, and a large bundled load secured along its side. Finished in a rich dark brown patina with subtle tonal variation throughout, the sculpture bears an impressed Japanese character mark on the body of the ox. Displays scattered scratches, rubbing, small surface marks, and areas of patina wear consistent with age and handling. Measures 17"H x 17"W x 7"D.
