Japanese Cast Iron Jonah & Whale Bank

A Japanese cast iron mechanical bank featuring the biblical scene of Jonah and the Whale. The bank is constructed from heavy cast metal and finished with glossy paint. The design consists of a figure in a yellow boat holding a smaller black-clad figure representing Jonah above a large whale with an open mouth. The figures are set upon a textured green base representing water, which sits atop a rectangular brown pedestal. A lever on the side activates the movement, causing the whale's jaw to open and the figure in the boat to pitch forward. The front decorative panel features raised lettering that reads J O N A H A N D T H E W H A L E. The base is secured with two Phillips-head screws and features a circular metal coin trap with a central slot. A white printed mark reading J A P A N is visible on the bottom edge of the brown base panel.
