Japanese Deep Relief "Sea Life" Carved Etagere
Japanese, early 20th century. Extensively and elaborately carved wooden etagere depicting deep relief carved fish swimming through swirling water, the crest carved with a whale, the openings and shelf edges with images of waves, water andplants, with assymetrical shelf placement and a paneled back carved with low-relief depictions of water plants. Approx. h. 90", w. 65", d. 21". Provenance: From the Private Collection of Mr. & Mrs. Frank Eldridge of Atlanta, Georgia.
Condition Report: Scattered carving loss, joint shrinkage and some finish scuffing consistent with age and use. Appears to be old repair to middle shelf joint.
