Japanese Edo Bronze Tenpo Tsuho Coin Money Tree

East Asia, Japan, late Edo to very early Meiji Period, ca. 1835 to 1870 CE. A 100 mon 5 coin copper money tree, with Tenpo Tsuho coins (worth 100 mon) cast in molds in the form of a "tree" so that multiple coins could be made with one mold. These pieces would then be broken off and finished prior to entering circulation. The "trees" were generally melted down and reused, so it is rare to find one intact! These trees were known as edasen. Size: 4.7" W x 6" H (11.9 cm x 15.2 cm)

Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA, acquired in November 2007; ex-private Clearwater, Florida, USA collection
