Japanese Edo Period Wood Bokken (Training Sword)

East Asia, Japan, Edo Period, probably later in the period, ca. first half of the 19th century CE. A wooden bokken, known as a bukuto in Japan, or training katana. It features a thin wooden handle tightly wrapped in very fine lacquered cord; the sheath is similarly wrapped and has an iron tip. It once would have had a full length blade. Although today bokken are made as works of art, primarily in Kyushu, during the Edo period they were consumable goods, designed to be broken in practice battles, and manufactured on site at samurai training locations around the country. Condition Report: The lower part of the blade is lost. The sheath and handle are wrapped in lacquered cord which has been repaired in one area on the handle; this is well done and difficult to discern. Nice patina on the sheath and handle. The wood is weathered commensurate with age.
