Japanese Imari Plate Cranes and Dragons 19th C

A colorful and vibrant foliate-rimmed plate with alternating panels of cranes and dragons. The underglaze cobalt is nice and dark blue with over glaze paintings in colored enamels. The plate has gilding that accents the paintings.

The plate has a shallow foot rim that is unglazed. The glaze on the plate is thick, soft and appears shiny.

MEASUREMENTS

8 ½” (21.6 cm) diameter x 1 ½” (3.8 cm) deep. Weighs 1 lb 1.8 oz (505 g)

CONDITION

There are no hairlines or breaks, and the plate rings true. There is a small chip on the foot, and a glaze chip on the green near the base of a dragon. The gilding is worn in many places. There are wear scratches on the well of the plate. There are kiln flaws, such as blue smudge marks on the underside and a reserve spot in the central well.
