Jar - Cizhou - Stoneware - A SONG / JIN DYNASTY CIZHOU JAR - China - Northern Song (960-1127)
This fine stoneware jar was made during the 11th - 13th century at one of the workshops in Henan province. The upper body and inner mouth are coated in a thick black glaze typical of Cizhou ware, the interior in a thinner brown glaze. The lower outer surface remains unglazed showing the cream-coloured stoneware body. Around the shoulder are two small loop handles. From the collection of the late Brian Page (1938-2018) , the well-known Oriental art and antiques dealer from Brighton. Good condition, unglazed marks inside, clearly where a smaller vessel was placed inside it during firing. Small chips on the base ( see photos)
