Jasper Johns (American, born 1930), Untitled (Duck), 1990, Color Lithograph
Jasper Johns (American, born 1930) is one of the most influential figures in postwar American art, whose work helped bridge Abstract Expressionism, Neo-Dada, and Pop Art. Born in Augusta, Georgia, and raised in South Carolina, he moved to New York in the early 1950s, where he became closely associated with Robert Rauschenberg, John Cage, and Merce Cunningham. Johns gained widespread attention for paintings of familiar signs and objects such as flags, targets, numbers, maps, and everyday symbols, using recognizable imagery to explore perception, meaning, and the act of representation itself. Printmaking became a central part of his practice, and he worked extensively in lithography, screenprinting, etching, and other processes with workshops including Universal Limited Art Editions and Gemini G.E.L. His works are held in major museum collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art, and Tate.
Untitled (Duck), from the Harvey Gantt Portfolio, 1990, lithograph in three colors on Arches paper. A dense field of deep blue-violet and black forms surrounds a pale salmon-pink rectangle bearing Johns’s simplified duck profile. Printed by James Reid and James Baughman and published by Gemini G.E.L., Los Angeles, the work was issued in an edition of 250 with 50 artist’s proofs. The portfolio was produced to benefit Harvey Gantt’s 1990 U.S. Senate campaign in North Carolina.
