Born in 1940 on the Flathead Reservation of Montana, Jaune Quick–to–See Smith is a member of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes. After a somewhat nomadic childhood, she began her art education in 1960 at Olympic College in Washington State, earning an associates degree. Finally, in 1976, after years of working at a myriad of jobs, she graduated from Framingham State College, Massachusetts, and eventually earned a Masters in Art from the University of New Mexico. Her education introduced her to the classical and contemporary art that she combined with her strong cultural ties and political activism, to create complex works that are layered with meaning. Her work resides in the collections of many prominent museums, including the Museum of Modern Art-New York,the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Walker Art Center, the Smithsonian American Art Museum and National Museum of Women in the Arts.
