Commentaire : Proche du sculpteur, Alexandre Dumas fils le désigna pour réaliser son buste destiné au foyer de la Comédie-Française. Le marbre fut exposé au Salon de 1874. L'écrivain et Carpeaux étaient très liés depuis leur rencontre à Rome en 1861 et Dumas sera l'exécuteur testamentaire du sculpteur, aux côtés de Chéramy, dédicataire de ce buste.

A close friend of the sculptor, the younger Alexandre Dumas asked to Carpeaux make the bust of him for the foyer of the Comédie-Française. The marble was exhibited at the Salon of 1874. Carpeaux and the writer had been close from their meeting in Rome in 1861 and Dumas was the executor of the sculptor's will, alongside Chéramy, to whom this bust is dedicated.
