The source of this rare original etching is: 'Denkmaler des Alten Roms oder Sammlung der vornehmen und noch in Rom vorhandenen Alterthumer nach Barbaults Zeichnung nebst einer Erklarung derselben aus dem Franzosischen ubersetzt.' Monuments of ancient Rome after drawings by Barbault and a description thereof translated from French, published by Conrad Heinrich Stage, Augsburg, 1782. This edition is a translation of the original French edition: 'Les plus beaux monuments de Rome ancienne The etching is engraved by Georg Christoph Kilian, German engraver, collector and cartographer (1709-1781 in 1762), after Jean Barbault (ca. 1705-1766), a French painter and engraver.Kilian is a talented engraver who was a student of Giovanni Battista Piranesi.
