Jean Daret
The Childhood of Bacchus
Oil on canvas (relined). 44.5 x 66 cm.
Signed lower right: Daret.
This work appears to be influenced by the paintings of Nicolas Poussin, whose works Jean Daret must have seen during his sojourn to Rome early on in his career in 1634 to 1635. Jean Daret was born in Brussels in 1613 and with his trip to Italy, he followed in the footsteps of many young Netherlandish artists during this time. He never returned to the Netherlands, and instead settled in Aix-en-Provence. His most important artistic works include the frescoes of Vincennes Palace, and his acceptance to the Academie royale de Peinture et de Sculpture testifies to the reputation which he enjoyed in France.
