Jean Dufy was born in 1888 in Le Havre, seventh in a family of eleven children. Younger brother of Raoul, he trained in painting with the support and encouragement of his brother. First attracted by Matisse and the Fauves, briefly tempted by Cézanne and Cubism, the artist developed, following the example of his brother, a work marked by color and joy of living. Ports and regattas, open windows, bridle paths and paddocks are some of the themes common to their works. After his military obligations (1910-1912) , he settled in Paris where he met, among others, Derain, Braque, Picasso and Guillaume Apollinaire. His first watercolors were exhibited at the Berthe Weill gallery in 1914. The artist continued to paint during his mobilization for the Great War. For a long time he created decorations for Maison Haviland, a porcelain maker in Limoges. Jean Dufy regularly participated after the war in the Salon d’Automne (between 1920 and 1932) and in group exhibitions. Personal exhibitions show his work (Paris, New York, etc.) . Jean helped Raoul create his famous fresco to the glory of electricity for the 1937 International Exhibition. The last decade of his life was devoted to travel, mainly in Europe and North Africa. Jean Dufy died in 1964. His work is part of the collections of prestigious museums, such as the Art Institute of Chicago or Moma in New York.
