"At the Fountain" by Jean-Ernest Aubert (French, 1824-1906), antique steel engraving by Charles Eugene Thibault (1835-?), signed in plate "Painted by Aubert" and "Engraved by Thibault," published by Selmar Hess, New York, undated [1880].

Charles Eugene Thibault was employed by Adolphe Goupil. Thibault's engravings were also published in the "Art Journal" (London, 1870s-1880s).

The original oil painting was created by Aubert in 1875. It is a 19th century romantic symbolic re-interpretation of the ancient Roman legend by Lucius Apuleius. Mortal Psyche gives sweet water to immortal god of love, Cupid.
