Exhibited
London, Crane Kalman Gallery, Portraits and Figures by Jean Marchand, 21 October-22 November 1969, cat.no.30, pl.4 (ill.b&w)
The present work is related to Roger Fry's painting The Round Table, illustrated in R. Shone, The Art of Bloomsbury: Roger Fry, Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant, London, 1999, p.205, pl.120 (ill.b&w).
Fry painted his version whilst staying with Marchand and his wife, the painter Sonia Lewitska, and the sculptor Marcel Gimond and his wife Julie in Vence. Fry was a keen supporter of Marchand, dedicating a chapter to him in his 1920 book Vision and Design, and selecting Marchand's work for inclusion in both of Fry's groundbreaking exhibitions held at the Grafton Galleries; Manet and the Post-Impressionists, 1910 and The Second Post Impressionist Exhibition, 1912.
When exhibited in 1967, this work was believed to date to 1936, yet Roger Fry's variation of the scene is dated 1920.
