The present work dates to Lady Ottoline Morrell's ownership of Garsington Manor, which hosted members of the Bloomsbury Group on many occasions including Lytton Strachey, Aldous Huxley, Virginia Woolf, T.S. Eliot and E.M. Forster. Marchand was at Garsington in summer 1922 with fellow guests including Simon Bussy, Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant.
