Jean I LIMOSIN (c.1528-1610):
Plaque in polychrome painted enamel and translucent enamels on
silver flakes with gold highlights representing Christ
child. The portrait is enhanced by a radiant nimbus in a white oval.
The band that surrounds the portrait of Christ is decorated with
four seraphim on silver paillons and foliage
flowers.
The style of this plate is characteristic of the very refined manner
of the painter Jean Limousin, grandson of the great
Léonard, born around 1580 and died in 1646, who enjoyed
a great reputation in Limoges during the first
half of the 17th century.
On 6 October 2020, two plates representing
Roman Emperors made headlines at Coutau
Bégarie & Associés.
A painted enamel plate depicting a Roman hero from
the Hendrick Goltzius cycle and monogrammed I.L recently went on sale as attributed to Jean or Jospeh Limosin (Christie's, Old Master Paintings and sculpture, 19 uin 2020, lot 23, former Mentmore Castle collection).
This plate, dating from the late 16th century like the previous
plates, appears to be in the hand of Jean
Limosin, the very accomplished style not being possible to be achieved by the
too young hand of Joseph, then barely a teenager.
Alexandre de La Forest Divonne.
Period Henri IV (1589-1610)
Dimension: 11 x 8cm
Condition: Some lacks and old restorations.
