Jean-Paul Gervais (French, 1859-1944), "Portrait of the Artist Paul Sain (1853-1908) in Honor of His Legion of Honor Award," 1895, oil on linen, titled and dated in banner, signed lower left, artist name inscribed on stretcher, presented in a hand-painted wood frame, H.- 24 3/4 in., W.- 21 3/8 in., Framed- H.- 33 in., W.- 28 3/8 in.
Condition Report: In remarkably very good condition. No inpainting or repairs were detected under UV light. There is no visible craquelure and the painting has not been relined. There are two tiny losses to the canvas in the upper left and lower right corners. There is a faint stretcher bar line on the bottom and a very small hairline area of abrading/threadbare area to pigment above it. Painting does exhibit surface soiling and there is some slack in the canvas- both of which can be easily remedied with cleaning and re-stretching.
