This book is a translation of Sartre's lecture "Existentialism Is a Humanism" presented in 1945.
Contains Introduction by the translator Bernard Frechtman (pp.1-7); Sartre's lecture (pp.11-61); the Discussion session that followed (pp.65-91); and Index (p.92). The Discussion section the give-and-take objections and response between Sartre and M. Naville, described by the translator as "a well-known French Marxist".
As Sartre defines existentialism, the central point is that, for human beings, "existence comes before essence, or if you will, that we must begin with the subjective..."
Jean-Paul Sartre (1905-1980) was a significant voice in the creation of existential thought. His explorations of the ways human existence is unique among all life-forms in its capacity to choose continue to influence fields such as philosophy, sociology, and literary studies. He was awarded the 1964 Nobel Prize in Literature, but refused the honor.
